Mulberry Plantation journals, 1853-1908 (bulk 1853-1889).

Four bound journals and loose papers containing records of Mulberry Plantation kept by John B. Milliken, Thomas Milliken, C.A. Ward, and R. Meynardie. Volume 1 (1853 Dec. 1-1858 Feb. 10) kept by Thomas Milliken reports activities on the rice plantation. Entries note agricultural tasks, quantities of rice winnowed and shipped, number of stock, weather conditions, sickness and deaths among slaves, "allowances" of food given out, and individuals assigned to the nightly watch. Volume 2 (1855 April 19-1856 Dec.), an overseer's journal kept by C.A. Ward and later (beginning 1856 Jan. 2) by R. Meynardie, notes plantation activities, the weather, individuals who are sick, and those assigned to the nightly watch. Entries also include "A List of Cattle taken 1st March 1856" and a chart of amounts of rice winnowed on various dates. Volume 3 (1856 Nov. 13-1860 Jan) probably kept by R. Meynardie is a continuation of volume 2. Entries include charts or lists of amounts of rice winnowed on Mulberry Plantation in 1856, 1857, [1858], and 1859; and a "List of Cattle. Taken in May 1857." Volume 4 appears to be a factor's record (1863-1864) of accounts with plantation owners followed by plantation journal entries (1877-1889) probably kept by John Boyle Milliken. Includes a list of Cooper River plantations and the distance between them, "Tax Returns July 1878" which lists the names of more than 50 individuals, and miscellaneous papers bound into the volume. Entries note the planting of rice and various garden crops, an experimental project to grow jute, visits to and from friends, church services attended, political views, a trip to California on the Othello in 1849 (1881 Jan. 31), a hurricane (1855), and an earthquake (1886 Sept.). Miscellaneous pages bound in volume 4 include a list of "Parcels of Rough Rice in Mill Tax in Kind Aug. 9 1864" and I.E. Seabrook's account with Dean Hall Mill (1864).
